10章　

1 さて、カイザリヤにコルネリオという人がいました。イタリア隊と呼ばれる部隊の百人隊長で、 2 彼は信仰深い人で、家族全員と共に神を畏れ、多くの施しを民に施し、絶えず神に祈っていました。3昼の三時ごろ、彼は幻の中ではっきりと、神の使いが彼のところに来て、「コルネリオよ」と言うのを見ました。4 コルネリオは彼を見て恐れ、「主よ、何事ですか」と言いました。すると、御使いは言いました、「あなたの祈りと施しは、神の前に届いて覚えられています。5 それで、ヨッパに人をやって、ペテロという名のシモンを招きなさい。 6 彼は皮なめし屋シモンという人のところに泊まっています。その家は海辺にあります。彼が、あなたのなすべきことを告げてくれるでしょう。」7 コルネリウスに語った御使いが去った後、コルネリウスは、自分の家の召使二人と、いつも自分に仕えている敬虔な兵士一人を呼び、 8 これらのことをすべて彼らに告げて、ヨッパへ送り出しました。9その翌日、彼らが旅を続けて町に近づいたとき、ペテロは午後六時ごろ、祈るために屋上に上がると、 10彼は非常に空腹になり、食事をしようとしましたが、人々が準備しているうちに、夢心地になってしまいました。 11すると、天が開けて、四隅を編んだ大きな布のような器が[1]彼のところに降りてくるのが見えました。それは地上に降りてきました。　

12その中には、地の四つ足の獣、野の獣、這うもの、空の鳥など、あらゆるものがいました。

13すると、声が聞こえました。「ペテロよ、起きて、ほふって食べなさい。」

14しかし、ペテロは言いました。「主よ、それはいけません。私は清くないもの、汚れたものを、一度も食べたことがありません。」

15すると、声はもう一度彼に言いました。「神がきよめたものを、清くないと言ってはならない。」

16 このようなことが三度繰り返され、そしてその器は再び天に上げられました。

17 ペテロは、自分が見たこの幻はいったい何を意味するのだろうと、心の中で驚きましたました、そのとき、コルネリオから遣わされた人たちがシモンの家を尋ね、門の前に立って

18 呼びかけ、ペテロという名を持つシモンが、そこに泊まっているかどうか尋ねました。

19ペテロがその幻について思いを巡らしていると、御霊が彼に言いました、

「見よ、三人の人があなたを捜している。

20だから、立って降りて行き、何も疑わずに彼らと一緒に行きなさい。私が彼らをつかわしたのだ。」

ちょうどその時、コルネリオから送られた人たちが、シモンの家を尋ね当てて、その門口に立っていました。

21そこで、ペテロはコルネリオからつかわされた人々のところへ降りて行き、「あなたがたが捜しているのは私です。何のために来たのですか。」と言いました。

22すると彼らは言いました、「百人隊長コルネリオは正しい人で、神を畏れ敬い、ユダヤ全土に評判の良い人ですが、聖なる御使いによって、あなたを家に招いてあなたの話を聞くようにと、神からお告げを受けました。

23 そこでペテロは彼らを呼び入れて泊め、翌日ペテロは彼らと一緒に出発しました。ヨッパの兄弟たちも何人か同行しました。

24 翌日、彼らはカイザリヤに入りました。コルネリオは彼らを待ち構え、親族や親しい友人たちを呼び集めていました。

25 ペテロが入って来ると、コルネリオは彼を迎え、その足もとにひれ伏して拝みました。

26 ペテロは彼を引き留めて言いました。「立ちなさい。私も同じ人間です。」

27 ペテロは彼と語り合いながら、中に入ってみると、大勢の人が集まっていました。

28 ペテロは彼らに言いました。「あなたがたも知っているとおり、ユダヤ人が異邦人のところに付き添ったり、近づいたりするのは、律法に反する行為です。しかし、神はわたしに、どんな人をも清くない者とか、汚れた者とか言ってはならないと示されました。

29 それで、わたしは召しを受けたとき、少しもためらわずにあなたがたのところに来たのです。それで、わたしを招いてくださったのはどういう意図ですか。

30コルネリウスは言いました、「四日前、わたしはこの時まで断食をしていたのですが[2]、午後三時に家で祈っていたところ、見よ、輝かしい衣を着た人がわたしの前に立って、

31 こう言ました、『[コルネリウスよ、あなたの祈りは聞かれ、あなたの施しは神のみまえに覚えられています。

32 それで、ヨッパに人をやって、ペテロという名のシモンをここに呼びなさい。彼は海辺の皮なめしシモンという人の家に泊まっています。彼が来たら、あなたに話すでしょう。[3] 』といいました。

33 ようこそおいで下さいました。今わたしたちは、主があなたにお告げになったことを残らず伺おうとして、みな神のみ前にまかり出ているのです」

34そこでペテロは口を開いて言いました、「本当に私は、神は人をかたよりみない方で、

35どの国民でも、神を恐れ、正義を行う者は、受け入れられる方だと分かりました。

36 あなたがたは、神がすべての者の主なるイエス・キリストによって平和の福音を宣べ伝えて、イスラエルの子らにお送り下さった御言をご存じでしょう。＊口語から

37 あなたがたも知っているように、その御言葉は、ヨハネが宣べ伝えたバプテスマの後、ガリラヤから始まって、ユダヤ全土に広まりました。

38 神はナザレ人イエスに聖霊と御力を注がれました。イエスは巡り歩いてよいわざをし、悪魔に苦しめられている人々をみな癒されました。神がイエスとともにおられたからです。

39 私たちは、イエスがユさダヤの地でもエルサレムでもなさったすべてのことの証人です。人々はイエスを殺し、木にかけましたが、

40 神は三日目にイエスをよみがえらせ、そのことを公に示されました。

41 すべての人にではなく、神によってあらかじめ選ばれた証人たち、すなわち、イエスが死人の中からよみがえられた後、イエスとともに食事をし、飲んだ私たちにです。

42それからイエスは、生者と死者の審判者として神に任命された方こそイエスであると、民に宣べ伝え、証言するようにと、わたしたちに命じられました。

43預言者は皆、イエスの名によってイエスを信じる者はだれでも罪の赦しを受けると証言しています。」

44ペテロがこれらの言葉をまだ話しているうちに、御言葉を聞いているすべての人々に聖霊が降りました。

45ペテロと一緒に来た、割礼を受けた信者たちは皆、異邦人にも聖霊の賜物が注がれたことに驚きました。

46 彼らが異言を話し、神をほめたたえるのを聞いたからです。 ペテロは答えて言いました。

47 「わたしたちと同じように聖霊を受けたこの人たちに、水でバプテスマを禁じて受けさせない人がいるでしょうか。」

48 そして、彼らは彼らに主の名によってバプテスマを受けるように命じられました。そこで彼らは、数日間とどまるようにとペテロに頼んだのです。

 

11章　

1さて、ユダヤにいる使徒や兄弟たちは、異邦人も神の言葉を受け入れたと聞きました。

2そこで、ペテロがエルサレムに上って来たとき、割礼を受けた者たちがペテロと争って言いました。

3「あなたは割礼を受けていない人々のところに行って、彼らと食事を共にしたそうだが」。

4そこで、ペテロは初めからそのことについて、彼らに順序よく説明して言いました。

5「私がヨッパで祈っていたとき、恍惚とした状態で幻を見ました。大きな布のような器が四隅でつり下げられて天から降りてきて、私のところまで来ました。

6私はその器に目を凝らして見ていると、地の四つ足の獣、野獣、這うもの、空の鳥などが見えました。

7 すると、わたしに声が聞こえました。『ペテロよ、起きて、屠って食べなさい。』

8 しかしわたしは言いました。「主よ、それはいけません。わたしは、汚れたもの、不浄なものを、一度も口に入れたことがありません。」

9 しかし、天からまた声がしてわたしに答えましたた。「神がきよめたものを、汚れたものなどと言ってはならない。」

10 このようなことが三度繰り返され、みな天に引き上げられました。

11 すると、すぐに、カイザリヤからつかわされた三人の人が、わたしのいる家にやって来ました。

12 そして、御霊がわたしに、疑うことなく彼らと。一緒に行けと命じられました。そこで、この六人の兄弟もわたしに同行し、わたしたちはその人の家に入りました。

13 そして彼は、「自分の家に天使が立っていて、『ヨッパに人をやって、ペテロという名のシモンを招きなさい。

14 そうすれば、あなたとあなたの家族全員の救いの言葉を告げてくれるでしょう。』」と言いました。

15そして私が語り始めると、聖霊が、初めに私たちに下ったように、彼らにも下りました。

16そこで私は、主の言葉を思い出しました。『ヨハネは水でバプテスマを授けたが、あなたがたは聖霊によってバプテスマを受けるであろう。』

17このように、主イエス・キリストを信じた私たちに下さったのと同じ賜物を、神は彼らにも下さったのですから、私はいったい何者なので、神に逆らうことができましょうか。

18人々はこれを聞いて黙り、神を賛美して言いました。「それでは、神は異邦人にも、命に至る悔改めをお与えになったのだ。」

19 さて、ステパノのことで起こった迫害によって散らされた人々は、フェニキア、キプロス、アンティオキアまで旅しましたが、ユダヤ人以外には、だれにも御言葉を宣べ伝えませんでした。

20 彼らの中にはキプロス人とクレネ人もありましたが、アンティオキアに着いてから、ギリシア人たちに語り、主イエスのことを宣べ伝えました。

21 主の御手が彼らとともにあったので、大勢の人が信じて主に立ち返りました。

22 このことの知らせがエルサレムの教会の耳にも入ったので、彼らはバルナバをアンティオキアまで遣わしました。

23バルナバはそこに着いて神の恵みを見て喜び、揺るがない信仰をもって主につくように、みんなの者を励ましました。

24 彼は立派な人で、聖霊と信仰とに満ちていました。そして、多くの人々が主に加わりました。

25 それからバルナバはサウロを捜しにタルソへ出発し、

26 彼を見つけると、アンティオキアに連れて行きました。そして、丸一年の間、彼らは教会に集まって、大勢の人を教えました。そして、弟子たちはアンティオキアで初めてクリスチャンと呼ばれました。

27そのころ、預言者たちがエルサレムからアンティオキアにやって来て、

28彼らのうちのひとり、アガボという人が立って、全世界に大飢饉が起こるであろうと、御霊によって告げました。それは、クラウデウス帝の時代に起こりました。

29そこで、弟子たちは、おのおの自分の力に応じて、ユダヤに住む兄弟たちに救援物資を送ることに決めました。

30彼らはそのとおりにし、バルナバとサウロの手によって長老たちに送りました。

12章

３　ある日の午後三時ごろ、神の使が彼のところに入ってきて、「コルネリオよ」と呼ぶのを、幻ではっきり見ました。

４　彼は御使を見つめていましたが、恐ろしくなって言いました、「主よ、なんでございますか」。すると彼が言いました、「あなたの祈や施しは神のみ前にとどいて、おぼえられています。

５　それで今、人をヨッパに使わして、ペテロと呼ばれるシモンを招きなさい。

６　この人は、海べに家をもつ皮なしシモンの客となっています。その人があなたがするべきことを語ります[1]」。

７　そこで、このお告げをした御使が立ち去ったのち、コルネリオは、僕ふたりと、いつも彼に仕えている部下の中で信心深い兵卒ひとりとを呼び、

８　いっさいの事を説明して、彼らをヨッパへ送り出しました。

９　こうして翌日、この人たちが旅をつづけてその町の近くにきたころ、ペテロは祈をするため屋上にのぼりました。時は昼の十二時ごろでした。

１０　彼は非常な[2]空腹になって、何か食べたいと思いました。そして、人々が食事の用意をしている間に、恍惚状態に陥りました。

１１　すると、天が開け、大きな布のような入れ物が、四すみをつるされて、[3]彼の上に降りて来るのを見ました。

１２　その中には、地上の[4]すべての四つ足や[5]野のけもの、這うもの、また空の鳥などがはいっていました。

１３　そして声が彼に聞えて来ました、「ペテロよ。立ち上がってそれらをほふって食べなさい」。

１４　しかしペテロは言いました、「主よ、それはできません。わたしは今までに、[6]普通の物、汚れたものは、食べたことがありません」。

１５　すると、声が二度目にかかって来ました、「神がきよめたものを、[7]普通の物などと言ってはならない」。

１６　こんなことが三度もあってから、その入れ物はまた天に引き上げられました。

１７　ペテロが、いま見た幻はなんの事だろうかと、思いめぐらしていると、見よ、コルネリオから送られた人たちが、シモンの家を尋ねて、その門口に立っていました。

１８　そして声をかけて、「ペテロと呼ばれるシモンというかたが、こちらに泊まっておられませんか」と尋ねました。

１９　ペテロが幻について、思いめぐらしていると、御霊が言いました、「見よ、三人の人たちが、あなたを尋ねてきている。

２０　さあ、立ち上がって下に降りなさい。そして、ためらわないで、彼らと一緒に行きなさい。わたしが彼らを送ってきたのです」。

２１　そこでペテロは、コルネリオが彼のところに使わした[8]その人たちのところに降りて行って言いました、「わたしがあなたがたが尋ねているペテロです。どんなご用でおいでになったのですか」。

２２　すると彼らは言いました、「正しい人で、神を敬い、ユダヤの全国民に好感を持たれている百卒長コルネリオが、あなたを彼の家にお迎えすることと、あなたからお話を伺うようにとのお告げを、聖なる御使から受けたのです」。

２３　そこで、ペテロは、彼らを迎えて泊まらせました。そして、翌日、ペテロは、彼らと共に出発しました。ヨッパの兄弟たち数人も一緒に行きました。

２４　こうして、彼らはその次の日に、カイザリヤに着たので、コルネリオは親族や親しい友人たちを呼び集めて、彼らを待っていました。

２５　ペテロがいよいよ到着すると、コルネリオは出迎えて、彼の足もとにひれ伏して拝しました。

２８　そこでペテロは彼らに言いました、「あなたがたは、ユダヤ人が他国の人と親しくしたり、出入りしたりすることが[11]どんなに違法であるかをご存知です。ところが、神は、どんな人間をも[12]普通である、あるいは、汚れているとか言ってはならないと、わたしにお示しになりました。

２９　こういうわけで、お招きにあずかった時、躊躇しないで私は来ました。そこで伺いますが、どういう理由で、あなたがたはわたしを招いたのですか」。

３０　すると、コルネリオが言いました、「四日前、この時刻まで、[13]わたしは断食をしておりました。また、午後三時のころ、わたしが自宅で祈りをしていますと、見よ、輝いた衣を着た人が、わたしの[14]前に立って、

３１　こう申しました、『コルネリオよ、あなたの祈は聞きいれられ、また、あなたの施しは神のみ前におぼえられています。

３２　そこでヨッパに人を遣わし、ペテロと呼ばれるシモンを招きなさい。その人は皮なめしシモンの海沿いの家に泊まっています。彼は来てあなたに語ります[15]』。

３３　それで、すぐにわたしは、使いをあなたに送ったのです。ようこそおいで下さいました。それで、今、わたしたちは、[16]神があなたにお命じになったことを残らず伺おうとして、みなで神のみ前に参上しているのです」。

３４　そこでペテロは口を開いて言いました、「わたしは、まことに[17]神は人をかたよりみないかたで、

３５　すべての国民のうちで、彼を畏れ、また、義を行う者は、彼に受けいれられることを悟りました。

３６　あなたがたは、神がイエス・キリスト・・この方はすべての人の主であられます・・によって平和の福音を宣べ伝えて、イスラエルの子らに送られた御言をご存じです。

３７　それは、ヨハネが説教したバプテスマの後、ガリラヤから始まり、ユダヤ全土にひろまった[18]言葉、

３８　すなわち、ナザレからのイエスのことです。神が聖霊と力とを注がれたので、彼はくまなく巡り、よい働きをし、また悪魔に押えつけられている人々をことごとくいやしました。神が共におられたからです。

３９　わたしたちは、[19]彼がユダヤ人の地やエルサレムでなさったすべてのことの証人です。彼らはこのイエスを木にかけて殺したのです。

４０　しかし神は[20]この方を三日目によみがえらせ、

４１　全部の人々にではなく、ただ、神があらかじめ選ばれた者たち、すなわち、[21]彼が死人の中から復活された後、共に飲食した者たちのみに現れさせて下さいました。

４２　また[22]彼は、人々に宣教することと、彼が生ける者と死者との審判者として神に定められたかたであることを、証しするようにと、[23]わたしたちにお命じになりました。

４３　すべての預言者たちは、[24]彼を信じる者はことごとく、その名によって罪のゆるしが受けることを、[25]この方のためにあかしをしています」。

４４　ペテロがこれらの言葉をまだ語っている時に、それを聞いていたすべての人たちに、聖霊が下られました。

４５　そこで、ペテロについてきた割礼を受けている信者たちは、[26]すべての国民にも聖霊の賜物が注がれたのを見て、驚かされました。

Cornelius Sends a Delegation

10 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 

² a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. 

³ About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!”

⁴ And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?”

So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. 

⁵ Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 

⁶ He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” 

⁷ And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. 

⁸ So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Peter’s Vision

⁹ The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 

¹⁰ Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 

¹¹ and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 

¹² In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 

¹³ And a voice came to him,“Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”

¹⁴ But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”

¹⁵ And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” 

¹⁶ This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.

Summoned to Caesarea

¹⁷ Now while Peter wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate. 

¹⁸ And they called and asked whether Simon, whose surname was Peter, was lodging there.

¹⁹ While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are seeking you.

²⁰ Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.”

²¹ Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius,and said, “Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?”

²² And they said, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.” 

²³ Then he invited them in and lodged them.

On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

Peter Meets Cornelius

²⁴ And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends. 

²⁵ As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 

²⁶ But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.”

²⁷ And as he talked with him, he went in and found many who had come together. 

²⁸ Then he said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. ²⁹ Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?”

³⁰ So Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 

³¹ and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are remembered in the sight of God. 

³² Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.When he comes, he will speak to you.’ 

³³ So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.”

Preaching to Cornelius’ Household

³⁴ Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 

³⁵ But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. 

³⁶ The word which Godsent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all— 

³⁷ that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: 

³⁸ how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. 

³⁹ And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they^[e]killed by hanging on a tree. 

⁴⁰ Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, 

⁴¹ not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 

⁴² And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 

⁴³ To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”

The Holy Spirit Falls on the Gentiles

⁴⁴ While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.

⁴⁵ And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 

⁴⁶ For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Then Peter answered, 

⁴⁷ “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 

⁴⁸ And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

１　彼らが人々にこのように語っていると、祭司たち、神殿の司たち、サドカイ人たちが近寄ってきました。

２　そして、彼らが人々に教を説き、死人からのよみがえりをイエスについて宣べ伝えているのに深く嘆きました。

３　そして、そこで彼らに手をかけて捕え、翌朝まで留置しておきました。それは、すでに日が暮れていたからです。

４　しかし、彼らの話を聞いた人たちは信じましたが、信じた人の数は多く、その男の数が五千人ほどにもなりました。

５　さて、次の朝、役人、長老、律法学者たち、

６　また、大祭司アンナスをはじめ、カヤパ、ヨハネ、アレキ

　サンデル、[1]つまり大祭司の一族が、エルサレムに召集されました。

７　そして、彼らは、そのまん中に使徒たちを立たせて尋問しました、「お前たちは、いったい　　　

、なんの権威、また、だれの名によって、このことをしたのか」。

８　その時、ペテロが聖霊に満たされて彼らに言いました、[2]「民の役人たち、および、イスラエルの長老たちよ、

９　わたしたちが、きょう、病人に対してした良いわざについてであり、この人がどうしていやされたかについて取調べを受けているのであるなら、

１０　あなたがたが十字架につけて殺したのを、神が死人の

中からよみがえらせたナザレ人イエス・キリストの御名によって、彼によって、この人が元気になってみんなの前に立っていることを、あなたがたご一同も、またイスラエルの人々全体も、ご承知ください。

１１　この方は、『あなたがた家造りらに捨てられたが、隅のかしら石となった石』なのです。

１２　この人による以外に救はありません。というのは、天下において、わたしたちを必ず救いうる名は、これを別にしては、他の誰にも与えられていないからです」。

１３　人々はペテロとヨハネとの大胆な話しぶりを見、また同時に、ふたりが無学な、ただの人たちであることを知って、不思議に思いました。そして彼らがイエスと共にいた者であることを認め、

１４　かつ、そのそばに立っている、彼らにいやされた者を見ては、まったく返す言葉がありませんでした。

１５　そこで、ふたりに議会から退場するように命じてから、互に協議をして、

１６　こう言いました、「われわれは、この者たちを、どうしたらよいか。すごいしるしが彼らによって行われたことは、エルサレムの住民全体に知れわたっているので、否定することができない。

１７　ただ、これ以上このことが民衆の間にひろまらないように、今後はこの名によって、いっさいだれにも語ることがないように、厳しくおどしておこう」。

１８　そこで、彼らを呼び入れて、イエスの名によって語ることも説くことも、いっさいしてはいけないと命じました。

１９　しかし、ペテロとヨハネとは、彼らに答えて言いました、「神に聞き従うよりも、あなたがたに聞き従う方が、神の前に正しいかどうか、あなたがたは、判断してください。

２０　わたしたちは、自分の見たこと聞いたことを、語らなけれなりません。」。

２１　しかし、人々の手前、ふたりを罰するすべがなかったので、彼らはふたりを更におどしてから、解放しました。みんなの者が、この出来事のために、神をあがめていたからです。

２２　そのしるしによっていやされたのは、四十代の人でした。

２３　そこで、彼らは釈放されてから、仲間の者たちのところに帰って、祭司長たちや長老たちが言ったいっさいのことを報告しました。

２４　一同はこれを聞くと、心をひとつにし、天の神にむかい声をあげて言いました、「主よ、あなたは天と地と海と、その中のすべてのものとの造りぬしなる神です。

Peter and John Arrested

4 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, ² being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. ³ And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. ⁴ However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

Addressing the Sanhedrin

⁵ And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, ⁶ as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. ⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”

⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: ⁹ If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, ¹⁰ let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. ¹¹ This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ ¹² Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Name of Jesus Forbidden

¹³ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. ¹⁴ And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. ¹⁵ But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, ¹⁶ saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them isevident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”

¹⁸ So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.¹⁹ But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. ²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” ²¹ So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done. ²² For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.

Prayer for Boldness

²³ And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. ²⁴ So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,²⁵ who by the mouth of Your servant David have said:

‘Why did the nations rage,
And the people plot vain things?
²⁶ The kings of the earth took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His Christ.’^[c^]

²⁷ “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together ²⁸ to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. ²⁹ Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, ³⁰ by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

³¹ And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Sharing in All Things

³² Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. ³³ And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. ³⁴ Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, ³⁵ and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

³⁶ And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, ³⁷ having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

１　ところが、アナニヤという人とその妻サッピラとは共に資産を売りましたが、

３　しかし、ペテロが言いました、「アナニヤよ、どうして、サタンがあなたがたの心を満たして聖霊を欺き、かつ地所の代金をごまかそうとしたのか。

４　売らずに残しておけば、あなたのものであり、売ってしまっても、あなたの自由になったはずではないか。どうして、こんなことをする気になったのか。あなたは人を欺いたのではなくて、神を欺いたのです」。

２７　彼らを連れてきて、議会の中に立たせました。すると、大祭司が問うて

２８　こう言いました、「我々は、あの名を使って教えてはならないと、きびしく命じなかったか。それだのに、見よ、お前たちは、エルサレム中にお前たちの教を、満たしている。お前たちは、あの人の血の責任をわたしたちに負わせようと、たくらんでいるのだ」。

３８　そこで、この際、諸君に申し上げる。あの人たちから手を引いて、そのなすままにしておきなさい。その企てや、しわざが、人間から出たものなら、滅びるだろう。

３９　しかし、もし神から出たものなら、あなたがたは、これを滅ぼすことはできまい。まちがえば、諸君は神を敵に逆らって戦っていることになるかも知れない」。

Lying to the Holy Spirit

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. ² And he kept backpart of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. ³ But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? ⁴ While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

⁵ Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. ⁶ And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

⁷ Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. ⁸ And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”

She said, “Yes, for so much.”

⁹ Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” ¹⁰ Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. ¹¹ So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Continuing Power in the Church

¹² And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. ¹³ Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. ¹⁴ And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, ¹⁵ so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. ¹⁶ Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Imprisoned Apostles Freed

¹⁷ Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, ¹⁸ and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. ¹⁹ But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, ²⁰ “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”

²¹ And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest and those with him came and called the council together, with all the elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

Apostles on Trial Again

²² But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported,²³ saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” ²⁴ Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. ²⁵ So one came and told them, saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”

²⁶ Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. ²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, ²⁸ saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!”

²⁹ But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.³⁰ The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. ³¹ Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.³² And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Advice

³³ When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them. ³⁴ Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. ³⁵ And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. ³⁶ For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. ³⁷ After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. ³⁸ And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; ³⁹ but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”

⁴⁰ And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. ⁴¹ So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for Hisname. ⁴² And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Seven Chosen to Serve

6 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 

² Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.

³ Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 

⁴ but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch,

⁶ whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.

⁷ Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Stephen Accused of Blasphemy

⁸ And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.

⁹ Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 

¹⁰ And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 

¹¹ Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 

¹² And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council. 

¹³ They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 

¹⁴ for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.” 

¹⁵ And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.
